How to Make a Nursing Pad for a Dog

For some people, the anticipation of the arrival of new puppies is an exciting time. When they finally arrive they're the cutest things, are not they? Of course, you probably can not keep them all, but until they're ready to give away they're you're responsibility. Sure, den mamma dog vil føde og rense dem, men hun kan ikke gjøre alt for dem. Within a couple of days the puppies are squirming all over the place and scooting away from Mom. Ja, de mamma dog vil kontinuerligt samle de pupper og trække dem tilbage til sig selv, men hvorfor skulle hun have denne ekstra bekymring, når du kan lave en pleje pad lige for hende og pupperne?

A nursing pad is a handy thing. It gives the puppies and the mom a comfy place to lie and also keeps the puppies in a certain area - for now. As they grow older, of course, it will be much more difficult to keep the puppies in place, though.

Make a really quick nursing pad by starting with a round, plastic tablecloth. The cloth can be cut down to a smaller size or left as-is for a large dog. An old pool noodle or two will help you keep the pups on the nursing pad. You can purchase the inexpensive, noodle-shaped Styrofoam at many different dollar-theme stores. They come in a variety of colors and sizes. Glue the noodles to the perimeter of the cloth and position them so that they form a complete circle around the tablecloth. You can throw a folded blanket in the bottom or use the tablecloth and pool noodles only. Instead of using a plastic tablecloth you can use a large circle of the fabric of your choice. Attach the pool noodle(s) to the edges of the circular fabric. The pool noodle allows the dog to get onto the nursing pad but prohibits the pups from scooting off the pad.

Even if you don't own any pool noodles you can still make a nursing pad with the protective sides that keeps the pups contained. Cut the circle of cloth much larger than you actually need. Roll the edges inward, several times, then glue in place. These rolled areas will act like the pool noodles to create a ridge around the nursing pad that prevents the pups from traveling too far. Instead of purchasing fabric for these projects you can use old tablecloths, sheets, blankets, throws and similar things.

Want a nursing pad that you can later disassemble? That's easy enough if you happen to have some hula hoops. Two or more of the hoops can be taped together to make the enclosure for the mom dog and pups. The hoops don't have to be permanently attached to anything; just fold a blanket or other piece of cloth then position the hula hoops around the blanket. If the pups are large, though, they might be able to scoot the hula hoops, so in this case, use double-sided tape to secure the hoops to the blanket. When the pups are older you can remove the hoops from the blanket and separate them from each other.

If you have no hula hoops and no pool noodles you can make a different nursing pad altogether. Roll a sheet or other item into a long roll then wrap it around the perimeter of the blanket or other pad you're using. After rolling the sheet you can glue it or stitch it in place. Then, you can stitch it to the circular blanket piece or you can use double-sided tape to stick it to the edges of the blanket or other cloth. The rolled material can be anything from a beach towel to a lightweight blanket to a plastic tarp. Use more than one towel, if needed, to complete the circle around the bottom cloth.

Using stitches or fabric glue allows you to easily launder the nursing pad when needed. Using an old tablecloth or shower curtain as the bottom piece means you can wipe the plastic off with a damp cloth anytime you want. It only takes a minute or two to remove the dog and pups, wipe and/or disinfect the nursing pad, then dry and replace the dogs. However, the tablecloth or shower curtain version is not as comfy as a blanket or cloth type.

It's a great craft for those who are expecting that new litter of pups soon.Click on link for more details about education  jitterymonks
